On a day in 1964
On a day in 1964
The River Forth was spanned
You could walk frae Fife tae the Lothian
And never leave dry land
From miles around twas a sight to see
Everyone did all agree
You could drive yer car frae Edinburgh
Right up tae Kirkaldy
Imagine the wondrous sight
Of this bridge o’ dreams and hopes
Wi its towers high above the Forth
Supporting massive great wire ropes
Specs o’ people on the bridge
Workin’ night and by day
And the workforce that built that bridge
Worked for more than just pay

Ferries no more
Verse 1
Many years ago when I was a lad
I would look forward to
Gae’n ow’r the Forth on a big day oot
Bound for Edinburgh Zoo
We would a’ pile in tae oor Faither’s car
Catch the boat at North Queensferry
And I kent a’ their names of by heart
Wallace, Bruce, Margaret and Mary
Verse 2
Then one day I was telt there’d be
A new bridge spannin’ the Forth
That would carry cars and pedestrians
Opening on September 4th
Though I was excited I have to say
I was also a bit sad
For I’d miss the trips on the Forth Ferries
I’d enjoyed since I was a lad
Verse 3
On the day when the bridge was opened
We were up and a’ scrubbed clean
Then we a’ went doon and lined the road
Tae catch a gimps o the Queen
She said a few words and christened it
And went owr in her big car
And as she drove I shed a tear
For the ferries that would be no more

500 feet up
500 feet up wi nae harness an’ ner a net atween us
but we a had oor hard hats on
tae protect oor heids if we fell aff
the returning hero’s o’ the first Forth Road Bridge
came back tae see the new ain
they were astonished at the auld ain they’d build
in the days when men were hard as nails
and they pondered on the new wan wi’
its computers and mod cons
“wi just a slide rule, pencil and paper
how did we manage tae build that”

Here's tae a that built her
Here’s tae a those that built her
An arduous game through wind and rain
Here’s tae a those that built her
We raise a glass to you
Here’s tae a those that built her
Ye have tae feel for the men o’ steel
That put up the mighty Forth Road Bridge
We raise a glass to you
Building bridges is a job done by the brave
It’s certainly not for the faint hearted
Workin’ days spent in the company o’ the birds
Wi yer life in the lap o’ the gods
Here’s tae those that built her
Workin’ lives extraordinary
Here’s tae a’ those that made the effort
We raise a glass to you
Building bridges is a job done by the brave
It’s certainly not for the faint hearted
Workin’ days spent in the company o’ the birds
Wi yer life in the lap o’ the gods
Here’s tae a those that built her
An arduous game through wind and rain
Here’s tae a those that built her
We raise a glass to you
We raise a glass to you

Road Bridge o’ the Forth
Verse 1
Road Bridge o’ the Forth
And artery o’ Scotland
Linkin’ the south tae the lands o’ the north
Let your splendour unfold
Tae a’ that behold you
Yer part o’ the fabric that makes Scotland bold
Refrain 1
Then we pause for a moment
Tae tak’ ye a’ in
Mighty bridge and twin partner
O’ rails kith an’ kin
You have served us for 50 years
Through sun and rain
Oh road bridge o’ the Forth
You’ve become our ain
Verse 2
As we look tae the future
We see a new structure
Risin’ up skyward tae tak’ yer place
And although it’s a fact
That your cables are rusting
Your spirit will live on
In a’ oor hearts
Refrain 2
Then we pause for a moment
Tae tak’ ye a’ in
Mighty bridge and twin partner
O’ rails kith an’ kin
You have served us for 50 years
Through sun and rain
Oh road bridge o’ the Forth
Your memory will remain
